Over time and with ageing, teeth collect stains from the food and drinks we consume. Habits like smoking, coffee drinking and drinking red wine all leave colour deposits on teeth that can cause teeth to look darker or yellow.
Although stains are a natural part of the ageing process, having a bright, white smile is possible for patients of any age. Professional teeth whitening under the supervision of one of our experienced Charters Towers dentists will give you better results than any product you can purchase at a store or salon.
At GoldCity Dental Centre, we offer patients two teeth whitening options: chairside and take home systems.
Chairside, In-House Teeth Whitening
If you have a special event in the near future, like a wedding, reunion or holiday, chairside teeth whitening can jumpstart your new, brighter smile in about one hour.
We protect the gums with a barrier paste before covering the front of teeth with professional strength whitening gel and allowing it to remain in place for 15 to 20 minutes. We can repeat this process up to three times in a single visit, resulting in whiter teeth by the time you leave the surgery.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits
Many patients opt to continue the whitening process at home with our custom take-home whitening system. We start by taking impressions of the teeth and using our in-house Mini-Star machine and the moulds of teeth to create whitening trays that will stay in place during treatment.
Custom whitening trays keep the whitening gel away from delicate gum tissue an on the surface of the teeth where stains develop.
Patients typically see maximum results after 10 to 14 days of regular use for 45 minutes to an hour per day.
You can keep your trays to touch up your teeth whenever new stains develop. If you need additional whitening gel, it is available in our practice. Most patients find twice-yearly treatments will keep teeth bright and younger looking.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
For most healthy patients, teeth whitening is completely safe. Studies show no alteration to the enamel, unlike abrasive toothpaste available over-the-counter. Professional teeth whitening gel penetrates the microscopic pores of the teeth using either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, bleaching away years of stains safely.
What If Teeth Whitening Makes My Teeth Sensitive?
Sensitivity is the most common side effect of teeth whitening. It is a temporary condition and should resolve in a day or two. Be sure to use only the recommended amount of teeth whitening gel to prevent it from seeping onto the gums. Taking a day or two off between whitening treatments will also help.
Desensitising gels and fluoride treatments also provide relief for patients with sensitive teeth.
